Do you retain your French Sécu rights if you are covered by the RNH in Portugal?

When moving to Portugal, access to healthcare is an important issue. How is healthcare managed for French RNHs in Portugal? If the answer to this question determines your future expatriation, we have some good news for you. How will you be treated in Portugal? RESIDIR EM PORTUGAL offers you a summary of healthcare for French "non-habitual residents" in Portugal.

The answer to the title question is positive: YES, YOU CAN STILL GET FRENCH HEALTH CARE!

You can benefit from RNH status while retaining your French Social Security rights. You will be guaranteed access to a public health system in both countries.

Why should you do this? A health insurance contribution of 3.2% continues to be deducted from private pensions by Sécurité Sociale in France. French pensioners with non-habitual resident status in Portugal (RNH) stop paying certain social security contributions in France, such as CSG, CRDS and CASA. French pensioners who have opted for RNH status thus transfer and retain the rights they had in France to the Portuguese SNS. It should be noted in passing that contributions are 6% lower on average than in France.

IN CONCLUSION

While Portugal is recognized for the quality of its healthcare system, it is more often criticized for its slow bureaucracy. Alternatives are available in the private sector. Being able to retain coverage under the French Social Security system is an undeniable advantage, especially since the premiums are lower.

If you have a long-term illness (ALD), the CFE (Caisse des Français de l’Étranger) is still recommended. Taking out private health insurance will also allow you to reduce the cost of private care and receive faster appointments. Take a look at the private insurance comparator on the Deco Proteste website.

FROM FRANCE

Contact your local CPAM to complete form S1. This will enable you to transfer your French entitlements to the Portuguese SNS. To authorise scheduled treatment covered at 100%, you will need to submit form S2 to the SNS. In the case of long-term conditions (ALD), joining the CFE (Caisse des Français de l' Étranger) may be worthwhile but is not compulsory. This will enable you to benefit from both schemes in each country, with the SNS only covering reimbursements from the Portuguese public sector.
